Types of Portable
Radios
A portable radio is a small radio that you can take with you and
use on the go. Most portable radios are battery powered, though some have the ability to be plugged in and used as
a plug in radio as well as a portable one.
Some portable radios are powered by means other than batteries;
some utilize solar power, and some even utilize a hand crank that charges the
batteries so that you will never be left without power. Portable radios also vary in which stations they pick
up.
Some are simply portable AM FM radios, though some are just FM, and other older models are just AM. Still others pick up short wave radio, or even the
weather stations. Some even pick up CB radio stations and television channels. Whichever is the case, all
portable radios have one thing in common; they can operate, at least for awhile, with no external power
supply.
Not all of them have the ability to be recharged, some of them require new batteries if they
exhaust the supply inside of them, but they are still portable and able to be used in situations where electricity
is not readily available.
Uses for portable radios vary with the radio. They can be used for
camping, for traveling, in emergencies, or even if you simply do not like being tethered down by a power chord in
your own home. Some people enjoy running or jogging to the radio, and a portable radio is perfect for this because
you can just take it with you and plug your headphones into it while you run.
Portable radios are also great if you are going to be on a long
road trip, and want to have a radio to listen to that is not the car radio. In some portable radios, there is even
an option to charge them using the cigarette lighter in your car!
Portable radios can be bought online for a range of different
prices and uses. The most important thing about buying a portable radio, however, is that you get one that will
suit both your needs and wants.
If you need one that can run on solar power, then ending up with
one that just uses batteries is probably not going to cut it for you. Or, if you need one that has weather
stations, then a typical AM/FM radio is probably going to leave you wanting.
